Nusrat Places Second at ESA Meeting

ECE PhD student Khandakar Nusrat Islam brought honor to ECE at the annual meeting of the Electrostatics Society of America (ESA) held at the University of Ottawa June 13-15, 2017.

Nusrat won second place for her poster presentation, “Characterization of methods of surface charge removal for the reduction of electrostatic discharge events in explosive environments.”

This poster and its acceptance paper were based on Nusrat’s Master’s Thesis which was written under the supervision of her advisor, ECE Professor Mark Gilmore and supported by Los Alamos National Laboratory.

“Nusrat’s presentation described fundamental measurements she made in the course of her M.S. thesis research on the localized charging and discharging of dielectric materials,” said Gilmore. “This work will have direct impact on how our national labs safely handle explosive materials in environments where static charge buildup can exist.”

The ESA was founded in 1970 as a nonprofit professional society devoted to the advancement and improved understanding of electrostatics. They organize a conference on an annual basis.

Currently, Khandakar Nusrat is working with Professor Edl Schamiloglu on high-frequency vacuum electron devices for her PhD supported by Los Alamos National Laboratory.
