Osinkski Promoted to Distinguished Professor
August 20, 2019
ECE Prof Marek Osinkski was recently promoted to the rank of Distinguished Professor. The rank of Distinguished Professor is the highest faculty title that UNM bestows.
Osinkski's reputation as a nationally- and internationally-renowned scholar, as well as his outstanding achievements, were considered by the UNM Provost's Office in awarding him this honor.
Osinski was twice awarded The Distinguished Researcher Award as well as The Gardner Zemke Awards in both Research and Teaching categories from ECE.
He has won seven Annual Creative Awards from STC.UNM and two awards from the Minister of National Education, Poland for collaborative work on computer simulation of operation and optimization of semiconductor lasers.
Osinski served as nominator for the 2003 and 2007 Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology, the Japanese equivalent of The Nobel Prize. He also served as a nominator for the 2017 and 2020 Japan Prize in Electronics, Information, and Communication, and for the 2018 Japan Prize in Physics, Chemistry, and Engineering.
As program director of UNM’s $3.1 million fellowship program on Integrating Nanotechnology with Cell Biology and Neuroscience, one of Osinski’s current focuses is to develop applications of rapidly evolving nanotechnologies to cell biology and neuroscience. This NSF-funded fellowship has supported 16 PhD students since 2006 with generous $30,000 a year stipends. The program also has an international component, supporting extended visits by the Fellows to Germany and Australia.
Osinski’s research interests include synthesis and characterization of colloidal nanocrystals, biomedical applications of colloidal quantum dots, nuclear radiation detectors (and nanoscintillators in particular), development of semiconductor ring-laser-based rotation sensors, fast/ slow light in semiconductor structures, ultrafast optoelectronic integrated circuits, modeling and simulation of optoelectronic devices, and growth and properties of novel optoelectronic materials.
A Fellow of the Society for Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) and of the Optical Society of America, Osinski has chaired or co-chaired 29 SPIE conferences and symposia, edited 24 SPIE Proceedings volumes, and served on numerous conference program committees. He has authored or co-authored more than 415 technical papers and five book chapters, and he holds five patents.
Osinski holds joint professorships with UNM’s Physics & Astronomy and Computer Science departments. He is also an ECE member of the Optical Science and Engineering Graduate Committee, the governing body of the OSE program.
Please join ECE in congratulating Dr. Osinski on his June 2019 promotion to Distinguished Professor the next time you see him!
